Piano Recital by Mark Hooper“[Hooper’s] grasp of the structure of classical and romantic music, allied with a most formidable keyboard technique shows a talent quite out of the ordinary.” - Sir Peter Maxwell DaviesSonata No. 15 in D, Op 28, Pastoral Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor Op 57, AppassionataTo celebrate 250 years of Beethoven, internationally-acclaimed pianist MARK HOOPER will perform two of Beethoven’s most famous sonatas, the Pastoral and Appassionata, in the QUT Gardens Theatre Foyer. Inspired by Beethoven’s love of nature, the Pastoral Sonata paints an idyllic, tranquil atmosphere in the beautiful first bars, building up to create wonderful, dramatic momentum. The Appassionata Sonata captures the spirit of man, and is a work of tremendous contrasts, like its composer. Originally from Brisbane, MARK HOOPER is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, London’s Royal College of Music, and Banff Centre Canada. A former lecturer in piano at Oxford University, Mark has performed throughout Australasia, Europe and Canada, including solo at London's Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Piccadilly Festival, and regularly in Oxford. Mark has worked in close collaboration with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Steve Reich, and performed in concert with Lord Yehudi Menuhin, and Tamás Vásáry, among others. He has recorded five solo CDs, including a CD of Beethoven’s Sonatas.Refreshments are available for purchase after the recital. Stay for Beethoven’s Letters at 3pm and discover the man behind the music, in Beethoven’s own words. This event is part of the 4MBS Festival of Classics 2020.
